Attiko Metro delivered 17 new trains to Urban Rail Transport S.A.
Attiko Metro S.A. delivered 17 new trains to Urban Rail Transport S.A. (STASY S.A.), as part of a EUR 155 million contract. In September 2009, the international tender was completed and the relevant Contract was signed for the supply of seventeen (17) new Metro trains destined to serve the Metro network, following the recent commissioning – in 2013 – of ELLINIKO, ANTHOUPOLI and AGHIA MARINA Metro extensions, as well as the future Metro extension to Piraeus.
Hanva-Rotem Consortium was the Contractor of the Project, who gradually delivered the new 3rd generation trains to ATTIKO METRO S.A..
Particular emphasis was placed on the energy performance of the new trains, and the key criterion was the minimization of energy consumption. Thus, the 3rd generation trains of the Athens Metro will be exceptionally friendly to the environment. Moreover, A/C system and all other necessary technical features have been incorporated in the subject trains, rendering them capable to become compatible with the future technological improvement as foreseen to be implemented in the Athens Metro Lines 2 & 3.
Among the features of the new trains are: bogies made of aluminum, increased structural strength of train vehicles to loads and fatigue, increased accessibility for Persons with Special Needs with moveable step bridging the gap between train and platform and a special area for PSN wheel-chairs; All cars shall be equipped with passenger information system with dual-monitor LCD displays, electronic maps instead of printed maps to be installed above doors indicating the train direction and the next train stops;Series III Trains are equipped with a new smoke detection system inside and outside the train, emergency exit windows and higher passenger safety during door closing.
ATTIKO METRO S.A. is currently working on the Metro Line 3 extension to Piraeus, consisting in 7.6 km of tunnel and six (6) stations, as well as the Tramway extension from Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) to the centre of Piraeus, consisting in 5.4km of single track and twelve stops.
