Railway development projects are a priority for the 2014-2020 programming period, the total amount allocated for the modernisation of Hungarian railways reaching HUF 1000 bn (EUR 3.2 bn).

According to Florian Szalóki Deputy State Minister  -  Ministry of National Development, transport projects received a total amount of HUF 2700 bn under the Transport Operational Programme (TOP) 2007-2013.  In the new financial period, the budget for the Integrated Transport Development Programme (IKOP) is HUF 1500 bn, of which HUF 1000 bn are for railway development projects. 

The Ministry of National Development also informed that two railway projects were recently approved by the EC to receive funding. HUF 27.7 bn will be allocated for the modernisation of Vac railway station project, the forth largest station in Hungary in terms of passenger traffic.  Works included the facade restoration, the upgrading of 17 km of lines, the reconstruction of passenger platforms, the construction of P + R and B + R parking facilities. The installation of a modern passenger information system will be completed by the end of 2015. 

The second projects refers to the 935 km GSM-R system installation and will receive HUF 30 bn.
