Georgian Railways has joined the Viking container train project, in the framework of the project partners meeting in Vilnius. Viking train is a joint project of Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania connecting Baltic and Black seas with railways. The companies GEFCO Turkey and Steveco could also become freight operators in Turkey and Finland.

"In its 12 years of operation, the Viking project has become widely known and successful, and the volume of transported freight increased more 100 times. Now one of the most important objectives for Viking is to become a major cargo artery between Turkey and the Scandinavian countries, " stated Lithuania's Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Saulius Girdauskas, present at the meeting.

In January 2015, train shuttle Viking registered a 22% increase in containers transported (3451 TEU) compared to the same period of last year. Last year Viking transported 41,185 TEU containers, 8% more than in 2013.
