Hyundai Rotem signs maintenance-contract extension in Ukraine
Hyundai Rotem and Ukraine Railway Speed Company (URSC), the operator of the state-run Ukrainian Railways, have signed a maintenance-contract extension under which the South Korean rolling stock manufacturer will provide maintenance and repair works for the HRCS2 EMUs that run in Kiev until 2022. The value of the contract is about KRW 44.7 billion won (EUR 36 million).
Originally signed in 2012, the contract was extended for three additional years. Under the deal, the company carries out periodic maintenance and repair works, provides spare parts and conducts technical inspections for the HRCS2 EMUs fleet built by Rotem for Ukrainian Railways under an agreement for the purchase of 90 units signed in 2010.
Hyundai Rotem provides tailored total solutions from design to production and maintenance to the local market in order to make the DMUs operate properly even under Ukraine's harsh winter conditions, including average temperatures of minus 20 degrees and average amount of snowfall of more than 60 centimeters.
According to Hyundai Rotem, the company hopes delivers its products to other CIS countries as well. Though the first project in Ukraine faced a series of problems triggered by the harsh local weather, Hyundai Rotem trains have proved high operational availability and reliability.
Hyundai Rotem is developing the train maintenance service sector as its new growth engine, the value of this business segment reaching KRW 300 bn.
