MAV has inaugurated the GSM-R monitoring and control center in Budapest. In a first phase,  the GSM-R system is being installed on 935 km of the Hungarian national rail network. Works are due for completion at the end of 2015.

In 2013,  public agency National Infocommunications Service (NISz) has awarded Kapsch CarrierCom and local company MVM OVIT a EUR 46 million contract to carry out the installation works.

The project includes the construction of one new control center in Budapest and the modernisation of one facility in Szekesfehervar, 147 base stations, about 1,150 km of fiber optic network and a new GSM-R dispatch system.  The total value of the first GSM-R phase is HUF 23.67 billion.

Some of the key components of the project also provide the base for the second phase of the development, which includes GSM-R deployment along a 2500 km railway network and is scheduled to be finished by 2020.
