New section of Sofia’s underground opened
Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, European Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski celebrated on the 8th of May the inauguration of a new section of Sofia's metro line, connecting Mladost 1 residential district to Sofia Business Park in the Mladost 4.
The 3km long new extension includes 3 stations. The project was financed co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), its value reaching EUR 44 million.
Minister Moskovski stated that in the 2014-2020 financing period, the budget for Sofia's third metro diameter is approximately BGN 800 million (EUR 409 million). Following the tender procedures, the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications will start financing the construction works for the metro section between Yanko Sakazov Blvd. and Krasno Selo residential.
Over BGN 1 billion have been invested in the expansion of the first metro diameter and the construction of the whole of the second diameter, as 20 new stations and 21 kilometers of lines have been constructed. Currently, the total length of the lines is 39 km with the total of 34 stations.
