Omnitek Natural Gas Technology powers locomotive in Czech Republic
Omnitek Engineering Corp. announced its natural gas engine technology is being utilized in two TEDOM natural gas locomotive engines powering a Czech Railways train in a pilot program with scheduled service three times daily between the Czech cities of Opava and Hlučín. The low-emission dedicated natural gas engines from TEDOM are certified to the Euro5 EEV emissions standard.
The pilot program was developed by the transport division of Vitkovice Machinery Group and the Czech Railway Research Institution in cooperation with engine manufacturer TEDOM s.r.o. Ltd., a long-time customer of Omnitek Engineering. The pilot program is seeking to demonstrate the economic, environmental and practical applications of CNG for rail transportation.
“This utilization of Omnitek’s natural gas engine technology in a locomotive application further distinguishes our products and capabilities from the competition. We applaud program leaders for choosing Omnitek’s 100% dedicated natural gas technology over dual-fuel technology, which offers little economic savings potential and not the same low-emissions performance. Applications of our technology for rail and marine engines complement our existing solutions for on-road, off-road and genset power and we look forward to expanding this business,” said Werner Funk, president and chief executive officer of Omnitek Engineering Corp.
“There are inherent advantages to the utilization of natural gas and we are well-positioned for meaningful growth – particularly in the United States, Mexico, China and Europe. The level of quote activity from potential domestic and foreign fleet customers is encouraging. Despite the intoxicating effect of temporary lower oil prices, environmental and energy security issues will not go away and government policies around the globe are important market drivers for our technology,” Funk said.
