Rail infrastructure
Slovenia's railway network consists of 1,209 km of railway lines, of which 330 km of lines are double tracks and 500 km are electrified. Slovenian Railways register 310 tractive vehicles, 156 of them were locomotives, 154 railcars, 353 passenger vehicles and 3,142 freight wagons in year 2013.
There were 408 freight wagons in private property. The number of freight wagons owned by the Slovenian Railways slightly increased by 0.7%, on the other hand the number of freight wagons in private property slightly decreased.
Rail freight transport
In 2013 more than 17.1 million tonnes of goods were carried by railways and 3,799 million tonne-kilometres were performed. Compared with 2012, the railway freight transport increased by 8.4%, expressed in tonnes, and by 9.5%, expressed in tonne-kilometres. Almost 81% of goods were carried in the international transport. In 2013 2.2 million tonnes of goods in transit were carried and 575 million tonne-kilometres were performed, which is 2.5% increase, expressed in tonnes, and 6.3% increase, expressed in tonne-kilometres, compared to 2012.
Considering the type of goods most so-called other goods (unidentifiable goods in containers and a mixture of types of goods) were carried by train (30.6%, expressed in tonnes, and 30.7%, expressed in tonne-kilometres). Second most carried type of goods were coal, gas, petrol and refined products (20.3%, or 18.1%). Third most carried type of goods were mining and quarrying. They represented almost 18.5% expressed in tonnes, and 19.9%, expressed in tonne-kilometres. Fourth place in rail goods transport took transport of basic metal and fabricated metal products (7.8%, or 10.1%).
In 2013 more than 2 million tonnes of dangerous goods were carried by train. The share of flammable liquids was 88.4%.
