Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Trenitalia has presented to Mr Enrico Rossi, President of the Toscana Region (Regione Toscana) the new trains manufactured by Pesa and Alstom. The event took place at Florence Santa Maria Novella railway station, on February 13.

The 13 Swing DMUs (ATR 220) manufactured by Polish Pesa Bydgoszcz, two purchased by Trenitalia and eleven by Regione Toscana, will be used on non-electrified lines. Currently, three trains are already present in Pisa, ready to service on Lucca - Aulla route starting with the 15th of March, after completing the homologation process for operating on the Italy's national network. The remaining DMUs will serve the Siena area. The vehicle has a seating capacity of 161 passengers and reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.

The 12 Alstom Jazz EMUs manufactured by Alstom will be used on electrified lines and have a seating capacity of 290 passengers. From the second half of this year they will roll into service on Florence metropolitan node: Florence – Prato – Pistoia, Florence – Valdarno and Florence – Empoli routes. Jazz EMU is based on Alstom’s Coradia Meridian platform and can run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.  The vehicles are part of a 70 regional trains ordered by Trenitalia to Alstom in November 2012, among which four are intended for Abruzzo region.

In parallel with the arrival of the new trains, continues the modernisation program of the rolling stock fleet. In 2015 about 85 % of Tuscany's regional passengers will travel on new or completely refurbished regional trains.
