Russian Railways interested in Greece’s railway infrastructure network

Russian Railways (RZD) President, Vladimir Yakunin stated that the Russian state company is not only interested in Greek railway operator TrainOSE, but also in the country’s rail infrastructure. The creation of a new rail gateway for cargo to Europe could constitute a productive investment. (Kathimerini)

RZD - GEK TERNA consortiumSNCF Participations and Grup Feroviar Roman (GFR) qualified for phase B of the tender process for the acquisition of 100% TrainOSE shares. The same consortium is competing with Siemens and Alstom Transport SA - DAMCO Energy SA consortium in the tender process for the acquisition of 100% of Hellenic Company for Rolling Stock Maintenance S.A. (ROSCO) shares. In addition, RZD - GEK TERNA consortium expressed interest in the sale of a 67% stake of Thessaloniki Port Authority S.A

However, Greece intends to privatise TrainOSE and ROSCO, the rail infrastructure manager is not part of the deal. The active railway network has total length of 2.554 km and is geographically divided into five main axis (Piraeus-Athens-Thessaloniki-Idomeni with its branches, The West Macedonia axis, The East Macedonia-Thrace axis, The Peloponnese network).
